This concept is called hypertext. The term "hypertext" was coined in the 1950s, well before the advent of the Internet! Simply stated, it means that a piece of text in one document can have a pointer to text in another place. This redefined the traditional, sequential nature of text. This concept describes the way information is organized on the World Wide Web today.
